Nigeria institutes committee on small arms, light weapons

The Nigerian president has recently established a nationwide committee on small arms and light weapons. The Nigerian president stated that on the issue of small arms and light weapons, "it is not possible to for any one nation to tackle the problem". Nigeria's solution to small arms provides a perfect example of what a DISEC resolution on this topic should include. We expect delegates to find practical solutions that can mitigate the threat of small arms on a region by region basis instead of broad solutions that lack practicality.

  1. Germany commends Nigeria on their decision to establish this committee and completely agrees with President Buhari's statement, having expressed similar sentiments ourselves. A solution that we advocate for would be the implementation of similar committees in each country, as we recognize the impracticality of attempting to use a singular body to curb the illicit trade of SALW throughout the world. Of course, the UN can only make suggestions, meaning all participating countries would be doing it on their own free will.

National committees such as Nigeria's PRESCOM should serve as a good base for countries to work off of. It would also be helpful for occasional meetings between these committees in order to collaborate on effective solutions to curbing illegal SALW trade should the issue prove too difficult for a single country to solve by themselves.
